www.nea.orgespEDUCATIONSUPPORTPROFESSIONALSMeetingtheNeedsoftheWholeStudent36BetweenoneinfourandoneinthreeK-12studentsreporthavingbeenbulliedaccordingtostopbullying.gov.Asmoreandmoreincidentsofviolenceandsuicidearereportedduetopervasivebullyingschoolsarescramblingtodevelopsolutionstostopthisepidemic.Manyschoolsarendingthatthemosteectiveapproachtobullyingpreventionisonethatisinclusiveofallschoolstaparentsstudentsandthecommunity.Reportsshowthatstudent-on-studentbully-ingfrequentlyoccursduringlunchandrecessbetweenclassperiodsinhallwaysandonbusridesbeforeandafterschoolallplaceswhereESPshaveauniqueandprivilegedroletoseeandinterveneinbullyingbehavior.ESPsareusuallytherst-lineresponderstostudentswhoarebeingbulliedsaysLorieMinerspecialeducationassistantatMat-SuDaySchoolinWasillaAlaska.Weareinthehallwaysbathroomscafeteriasplaygroundsbusesandlockerrooms.Howeverbullyingcanbehardtospotandidentifyandmanyvictimsarestilltooashamedorafraidtoaskadultsforhelp.Bulliestoocanchangetheirbullyingbehaviortobelessconspicuous.ForthesereasonsNEAtookaproactiveap-proachandcreatedtrainingcadrestotrainteachersadministratorsandeducationsup-portprofessionalsonhowtoidentifyandeectivelyinterveneininstancesofbullying.NEAdevelopedtheNEABullyingPreventionKitandanti-bullyingwebsiteNEAsBullyFreeItStartswithMetoprovideresourcestoeducatorsandparents.Thekitandwebsiteprovidethebestavailableresearchonbullyingprevention.TheyalsoprovideguidanceforeducatorswonderingHowdoIadvocateHowdoIinterveneWhatisbullyingInadditionNEAactivelysendsexperttrainersouttocommunitiesanddistrictshithardbybullyingandbully-relatedsuicide.OnecaringadultonaschoolcampuscanmakeanenormousdierenceinthelifeofabulliedchildsaysMinerwhofacilitatesaworkshoptitledTheImportantRoleofESPsinStudentBullyingPreventionandInterven-tion.OneworkshopstrategyshestressesQuicklyrecreateabullyingincidentwiththestudentsinvolved.ThenrolemodeltheappropriateinteractionbetweentheindividualsMinersays.Weencouragestudentstoresolveconictsandnotfeelashamedaboutdiscussingitwithsta.InTooeleUTparentsandstudentsintheTooeleCountySchoolDistrictTCSDhadbeencomplainingthatbullyinghadbecomeapersistentdistrict-wideproblemthatneededimmediateadministrationattention.OnOctober312014inpartnershipwithTCSDtheTooeleEducationSupportProfessionalsAssociationTESPAandtheUtahSchoolEmployeesAssociationUSEAcametogethertoprovideacomprehensivetrainingforschoolsupportstaonbullyingandsuicideprevention.Thetrainingmarksthelaunchofayear-longanti-bullyingcampaigninthedistrict.EducationsupportprofessionalssuchasbusdriverscafeteriaworkersandparaeducatorsareofteninapositiontoseebullyinginplacesthatarenotseenbyteachersandotherschoolstasaidMikeGarciaTESPAPresidentwhospokeattheTooeletraining.Theyneedtrain-ingtohelpunderstandwhatbullyingiswhatitsnotandwhattodoaboutbullyingwhentheyseeit.Nearly400ESPsattendedtheone-daytraining.Suchagreatturnoutmeansthatsupportstawanttodotheirbesttokeeptheirstudentssafeandbully-freesaidUSEAPresidentJeradReay.IamproudthattheTooeleESPAssociationidentiedthisneedandprovidedagreattrainingforitsmembers.IknowthatTooelesESPcommunitynowhastheknowledgetospotsuicidaltendenciesbeforetheybecomeatragedy.TotakeNEAsBully-Freepledgeandndan-ti-bullyingresourcesclickhere.
