Florida's New Education Union
The United Faculty of
Florida is now part of the new Florida Education Association, formed by a
merger of NEA and AFT affiliates in the state.
Florida's two public education unions have completed a two-year merger
process and created a new statewide organization, the Florida Education
Association.
At a founding convention this spring, Florida Teaching Profession-NEA and
Florida Education Association United joined together to create a new
organization of over 120,000 members that will speak with a powerful and
unified voice for more than 250,000 public education employees.
The new FEA is now the largest union and the largest professional
association in Florida.
Maureen Dinnen, a history and government professor at Broward Community
College, was elected president of the new organization.
This spring's NEA's Conference 2000 drew nearly 1,700 faculty,
support personnel, and community leaders to Atlanta to participate in seminars
and development sessions around the issue of quality education.
Higher education participants got a chance to practice dispute resolution
techniques, review the latest research on distance education and collective
bargaining, and listen to outstanding practitioners talk about their work.
NEA members from across the nation can follow the action at this
year's NEA Representative Assembly online at
www.nea.org/ra.
The Representative Assembly, NEA's highest decision-making body, begins July
3 in Chicago. The nearly 10,000 elected delegates at the RA will set
Association policy on a wide variety of issues and concerns.
On the Web, you'll find information about the issues and special convention
events-including live coverage of major addresses and awards presentations.
Higher ed members attending the RA can join with students and retirees to help
spruce up a local elementary school near Chicago. To volunteer, contact Malcolm
Staples at 202-822-7123 or E-mail: mstaples@nea.org.
Two positions are currently
open on the Review Panel of Thought & Action, the NEA higher
education journal. The positions carry three-year terms and start this coming
fall.
