They're Talking On Campus.
. . . About how best to respond to the tragedy
of September 11. During the days following
the hijackings and explosions, hundreds of colleges and universities across
the nation held memorial services for the victims.
Campuses also raised funds for the families of
the victims, stepped up security measures, and took steps to protect the
more that half a million foreign students studying on U.S. campuses.
At the same time, opinions on our nation's campuses
are sharply divided over what steps the nation should take now.
Professors and students at many campuses have
joined the call for war against the terrorists and those countries supporting
them, while more than 140 campuses held peace vigils calling for a nonviolent
response to the terrorist attacks.
. . . About a directive from the U.S. Department
of Education telling lenders holding federal
student loans to provide financial relief from monthly loan payments to
those borrowers affected by the terrorist attacks.
