They're Talking On Campus. . .
. . .About sex discrimination in the academy. A report from the American Association of University Women finds that although women now comprise more than half of instructors and lecturers and nearly half of assistant professors nationwide, only 33 percent of associate professors and 20 percent of full professors are women.
Tenure Denied: Cases of Sex Discrimination in Academia reports on 19 cases of women who took their fight for tenure to the courts, providing an inside look into the toll these battles take on women's lives and careers. For more information and to obtain a copy of the report, visit www.aauw.org.
. . . About 26 women professors at Harvard University who have signed onto a letter of complaint to its president, Lawrence H. Summers, alleging that since he has taken office, the percentage of female professors offered tenured faculty jobs has declined drastically.
In 2000–01, 37 percent of tenured faculty jobs up for grabs were offered to females. Since Summers took over as president that percentage has fallen steadily to a low of 11.1 percent in 2003–04.
. . .About a finding that sports programs have little to no effect on a college's alumni donations or on the academic quality of its applicants. A report from the Knight Foundation Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics cites a pervasive false impression that increased spending on athletics programs translates to increased revenue for schools, which it says is rarely the case. |
