Thinking Critically
Providing our students with current information in a specific field of knowledge may not mean much if they don’t know how to think about what they’re learning. Critical thinking is a much-used but often imprecise term. Yet its importance cannot be denied. This issue’s Thriving in Academe provides some relatively painless approaches to encouraging critical thinking across the disciplines.
Massachusetts Community Colleges Still Without a Contract
On April 27, Bristol Community College professionals Diane Yohe, Jerry Lepage, Denyse Wilhem, and Alan Powers led a protest of Massachusetts's "1000 Days of Shame" on their campus, part of a statewide effort to publicize the state's reneging on a signed contract with the Massachusetts Community College Council, as Massachusetts drops to 47th place in per capita support for public higher education.
