They're Talking On Campus. . .
. . .About a national campaign to focus the public's attention on the need to increase financial support for the nation’s colleges and universities. The Public Trust Initiative, a consortium of higher education associations headed by the American Council on Education (ACE), is considered to be the broadest coalition of higher education groups ever.
The group hopes to convince the the public that colleges help society as a whole, and that more people benefit from higher education than the graduates themselves.
Stanley O. Ikenberry, former president of ACE and head of the campaign, says that simply decrying the decline in state and federal aid will not benefit higher education,"We want the public to see us as a vehicle to solving crises, not a crisis in itself."
. . .About a U.S. Supreme Court decision that protects whistle-blowers who accuse educational institutions of sex discrimination. The ruling expands the interpretation of Title IX, which prohibits sex discrimination by institutions receiving federal funds, by protecting advocates for victims of sexual discrimination who did not necessarily suffer themselves.
In the case before the Supreme Court, Jackson v. Birmingham Board of Education, Roderick Jackson was fired as coach of a high school girls’ basketball team after he complained of discrimination against the team. His lawsuit was thrown out on the basis that Title IX did not apply to his situation. The Supreme Court overturned the lower court ruling, paving the way for teachers and coaches to help enforce Title IX. |
