Reflections on The Ratings
Tales from Real Life
I provide evaluation services for my own and other institutions.
One department chair who wanted to rank faculty in his department asked me
to produce reports of average student rating scores to the third decimal
point.
Assuming this level of precision is greatly overestimating the
discriminating power of ratings and is grossly unfair to the faculty.

Quite a bit of my time as a faculty developer is spent in individual
consultation with faculty members, generally on the topic of teaching
effectiveness.
All too frequently it happens that a faculty member walks into my office,
sits down, and says something like, "My average score was a 2.85, and
my department chair says I have to get an average of 3.5 by the end of next
semester. How can I do this?"
This is not exactly what we mean by faculty development.
