Reflections on Class Discussions
Tales from Real Life
Early on, I learned an important lesson about the potentially damaging
effect of humor in the classroom.
The incident that taught me that lesson took place during a literature
class discussion one day at the beginning of a semester. It started when a
relatively quiet student made a comment. I responded with a spontaneous
remark I thought was rather humorous.
Immediately, the student wilted before my eyes. She apparently took my
comment personally, very personally.
My comment had clearly hurt this student. Hurting students is totally
contrary to everything I believe teaching and learning should be about. To
this day, some 30 years later, I can still remember the look on that
student's face. --
