From Capital to Campus
Higher education supporters are concerned that Republican budget
plans intend to finance increases in K-12 education aid by cutting into
federal higher ed funding.
The newly formed Alliance to Advance Student Aid, backed by NEA and most
of the associations representing colleges and graduate programs, is hoping
to head off the plan.
The group plans a grassroots campaign to fight for higher ed dollars by
connecting students, their parents, and college presidents to Congress. The
effort will feature a Web site --- www.studentaidalliance.org
--- and a toll-free phone number, 800-574-4AID, through which citizens can
be patched through to their representatives ...
NEA supports increases in the full range of education programs.
But the Congressional Budget Resolution backed by GOP leaders would reduce
overall funding for education and related programs by $200 million below
last year's levels.
Because the budget assumes a $500 million increase in education programs
for students with disabilities, other education programs, including higher
education, would have to absorb a $700 million cut.
NEA lobbyists are asking NEA members to contact members of Congress and
urge them to invest in all education.
