On the Road
with Christine Maitland *
Recently, I attended the California Faculty Association's spring assembly,
held in Los Angeles. The CFA represents some 20,000 faculty on the 22
campuses of the California State University system. It's the largest NEA
higher ed affiliate.
In March the CFA membership voted down a tentative agreement with the
university. Subsequently, the university chancellor effectively imposed a
contract on the faculty.
Not surprisingly, a good part of the spring assembly was devoted to
deciding how to respond to the high-handed actions of the university.
What did they come up with? The CFA is calling on the university to come
back to the bargaining table with a meaningful proposal for settlement that
shows respect for the faculty and affirms the principle that faculty must be
a full partner in decision making at CSU.
CFA's leaders explain that the faculty role in ensuring quality is
essential, especially at a time when there's so much political pressure on
public colleges and universities to cut corners and save money.
What happens to faculty in the CSU has implications for faculty
nationwide, so we're asking all our members nationwide to keep in touch and
lend support. Keep up to date at: www.calfac.org.
