...about a finding that the number of students earning degrees in fields such as computer science, engineering, engineering technology, mathematics, and physics declined by 5 percent between 1990 and 1996.

Research by the American Electronics Association also finds that nearly half of the doctorates in high technology in 1996 were awarded to foreign students.

...about the low retention rates for students attending collegeon Georgia's merit-based HOPE scholarships.

Only one out of three freshmen who earned the scholarships in 1997-98 remained eligible for the award as a sophomore, says the state's Student Finance Commission.

To keep the award, a student must maintain a B average in college. Critics maintain that the students losing HOPE are disproportionately poor, the first generation in their families to go to college, and minorities.
