. . .about a finding that not-for-profit HMOs are more likely than for-profit HMOs to make sure patients get early preventive care.

The study, reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association, analyzed 329 HMOs according to how well they performed in 14 areas. In every category the non-profits performed better. in fields such as computer science, engineering, engineering technology, mathematics, and physics declined by 5 percent between 1990 and 1996.

. . . about the 1999 college application season being the most competitive in history. Several factors contributed to the blizzard of applications, including the growing belief that a college degree is essential for success.

. . . about a court ruling that 10,000 temporary workers at Microsoft are entitled to benefits the company offers to regular employees.

The ruling indicated that temporary workers can be considered employees if their work is controlled not by the placement agency, but by the company for which the work was being done.
