On the Road

There was an extra measure of excitement at the California
Faculty Association Representative Assembly this fall.
The gathering, held in Los Angeles in October, was upbeat for a
couple of reasons. First, because California Governor Gray Davis
recently signed agency fee legislation that may help bring as many
as 11,000 new members into CFA, making it the largest NEA higher
education affiliate.
In addition, delegates were excited because one of CFA's own
members, Gloria Romero, whom the Association helped elect to the
California State Legislature in last fall's election, was a
featured speaker at the assembly.
Assemblywoman Romero spoke to the group about the importance of
the California State University to the people of California.
Affordable, quality, public higher education for all was part of
Romero's platform in her Assembly bid.
Romero, a product of public higher education in California,
having attended Barstow Community College, Cal State Long Beach,
and the University of California Riverside, now serves on the
Assembly's higher education committee.
She was a professor of psychology at Cal State Los Angeles at
the time of her election.
Delegates to the RA were also excited about an initiative of
their own: on "The Future of the CSU: Regaining a University
for the People of California," a project to expand CFA's role
in making sure the CSU faculty plays a leading role in ensuring
that the working people of California have access to a first-class
university education.
