Award Submission Guidelines
Manuscripts should be reader-friendly, written
for a general audience, and unpublished anywhere else. We welcome essays,
research pieces, scholarly articles, and narratives. Authors should
follow the Chicago Manual of Style (14th edition) in the preparation
of manuscripts requiring documentation, using the "humanities style"
for endnotes and an alphabetic list of works cited. For general questions
such as punctuation, spelling, abbreviations, quotations, obtaining
copyright permissions, and reference format for particular kinds of
sources, consult the Chicago Manual of Style, 14th Edition (University
of Chicago Press, Chicago, Ill., 1993).
Please submit entries on a computer disk and
in hard copy (one copy). Please include name, mailing address, and telephone
number on the title page only. The author(s) name(s) and self-citations
should not appear on other pages. Articles should be 5,000 words or
less, including tables, footnotes, and references. All essays submitted
for the NEA Excellence in the Academy Awards will be considered for
publication in Thought & Action, the NEA Higher Education
Journal.
If your submission is under consideration elsewhere,
please inform us at the time you submit the article to us. If the article
is accepted for publication elsewhere, you must immediately withdraw
it from consideration by the NEA Excellence in the Academy Awards.
Please double space the printed copy, and copy
only a single side. Formatting should be limited to paragraph breaks,
bold, and italics. We prefer submission in Microsoft Word 6.0 but can
convert other files. Please specify the word processing program on the
computer file. Include a self-addressed, stamped post card or envelope
if you wish to be notified when we receive your submission.
Winners will be notified in January. Awards
will be presented at the annual NEA Higher Education Conference in March.
Submissions will be judged by the eight person Thought & Action
Review Panel. The judges decisions will be final. Manuscripts will
not be returned. All entrants will be notified of the results.
