Higher Education Conference
March 2 - 4, 2001
Wyndham Emerald Plaza Hotel
San Diego California
At
$740 billion per year, education is the second largest economic sector
in the United States. In response to political and business pressures,
higher education institutions are creating partnerships with industries,
banding together to market faculty products, and restructuring academic
life and governance. The term "corporatization," often used
prejoratively, describes a host of changes within the academy.
The Higher Education Enterprise: Partners, Profits,
and Politics
This
conference will explore the business of higher education - highlighting
trends that hold promise and examining those that signal dangers ahead.
- Can we learn from
the experience of other countries?
- How can faculty
and staff become the new entrepreneurs of this economic sector?
How
can the academy develop the positive aspects of partnerships while preventing
the takeover of higher education by private sector attempts to erode
academic freedom?
