. . . about the appointment of former NEA President Keith Geiger as director of the Office of Academic Programs at the United States Information Agency.
Geiger will administer the Fulbright Program, as well as other exchanges with teachers, scholars, and academic institutions.
. . . about the National Cost of Higher Education Commission. The 11-member bipartisan body appointed by Congress will study college finances and recommend steps to prevent large tuition increases in the future. It will have 120 days from its first meeting to complete its work.
. . . about a $350 million plan to create federal scholarships and forgive student loans for students who vow to teach in poor urban and rural school districts.
The plan--which also includes money for colleges with high-quality teacher-training programs--was proposed by President Clinton as part of the overhaul of the High Higher Education Act.
. . . about a boom in the popularity of prepaid tuition savings plans. Seventeen states now have such plans, enrolling 700,000 future students. The typical participating family has two children and earns $35, 000 to $70,000 a year.
