They're talking on campus. . .

...about news that the Class of 1998 will be greeted by the best job market this decade when they graduate next spring.
The National Association of Colleges and Employers projects that the number of new college graduates hired next spring will be up 19 percent over last spring. The optimistic outlook is attributed partly to the lowest unemployment rate in 24 years. For more, visit the association web site: www.jobweb.org.

...about a new survey suggesting that teaching is getting more emphasis at research universities.
In a 1991 survey, conducted by Syracuse University's Center for Instructional Development, 73 percent of the faculty respondents reported that their institution's emphasis was on scholarship, rather than teaching, or a balance of the two.
In a 1996 follow-up study, the proportion reporting scholarship alone fell to 49 percent.
