NEA is opposing the Clinton Administration's plan to phase out the Perkins Loan Program.
The government's oldest need-based student-aid program provides matching funds to colleges to grant loans at interest rates well below those charged by banks to low-income students. More than 80 percent of the borrowers are from families with incomes unde under $30,000.
The Perkins loan program is a unique program for low-income borrowers, say NEA lobbyists. "No other program does what it does. It can't be replaced."
Call 1-800-574-4AID to tell the President you support continuing the Perkins loan program.

NEA supports the principles behind the President's High Hopes for College for America's Youth proposal.
The President is proposing federal support for partnerships between middle or junior high schools in low-income communities, colleges, and community groups.
These projects would begin working with children as early as sixth grade, providing financial aid information, mentoring, and other academic support to get them on the road to college.
