Partnership Increases Student Success

Some students at risk of dropping out of high school are finishing their senior year on a college campus thanks to an NEA grant.

Higher ed members at Greenfield Community College are working with their Massachusetts Teachers Association K-12 colleagues at nearby Northampton High School to help these kids graduate from high school while they earn college credit.

NEA Higher Education Community Partnership grants are given to NEA statewide higher education units that are building partnerships between the higher education units, communities, and K-12 schools.

In this case, the grant funds a dual-enrollment program used successfully at another area high school that the Northampton school district didn't t have money to pay for.

In the dual-enrollment program, college and high school counselors keep track of students, providing academic counseling as needed. Peer tutoring is also available.

The students can get their diplomas and earn up to 12 college credits a semester. Of the 12 students in the original program, 11 have earned high school diplomas, with the 12th slated to graduate this year. Two of the students who feared they might never finish high school earned A.S. degrees from Greenfield this past December.
