Manuscript Guidelines for the NEA Journal of
Higher Education
Thought & Action
maintains the highest circulation of any refereed journal in higher education,
with a readership of nearly 150,000. The title of the National Education
Association's journal, Thought & Action, clearly communicates
its purpose and scope. That is, Thought & Action seeks to provide
its readership with theoretical and practical information on issues in
higher education that are important to faculty and staff. Submissions
are blind-reviewed by six NEA members in higher education, appointed
to a Review Panel for three-year terms.
Contributors to Thought & Action should
follow the Chicago Manual of Style (14th edition) in the preparation of
manuscripts, using the "humanities style" for endnotes and an
alphabetic list of works cited. Unlike most other journals in higher education,
Thought & Action seeks manuscripts that are "reader-friendly"
or conversational in tone and are designed to reach a general audience.
The journal also publishes research pieces dealing with important issues
in higher education and is especially interested in articles aimed at
improved teaching and learning. Previously published articles are not
considered.
Authors should submit one hard copy and one CD copy of each article. Please include name, mailing address, and telephone
number on the title page only. To facilitate the blind review process,
the author(s) name(s) and self-citations should not appear on other pages.
Manuscripts typically should not run more than 15 pages or 4,000 words,
including tables, footnotes, and references. Please double space the printed
copy, and copy it on only a single side. The word processing program should
be specified, and, on the computer file, formatting should be limited
to paragraph breaks, bold, and italics. We can sometimes accomodate online submissions if they are in Microsoft Word. Please check with the editor.
Manuscript submissions are welcome throughout
the year.
Current themes of interest to Thought &
Action include but are not limited to: issues of teaching and learning,
innovative approaches to collective bargaining, partnerships between K-12
and higher education, professional development and teaching tips.
The journal is available as a membership benefit
to NEA members. Copies for libraries and institutions may be obtained
by subscription. Individual subscriptions for non-members are also available.
